Seven professional photographers from U.S. trained 21 Nicaraguan adolescents from various regions of the country involved with Save the Children. Photographer Fred Roberts and his colleagues taught this unique workshop in Nicaragua from 24 to 31 May in La Dalia, Matagalpa.
The participants were 21 adolescents, 12 males and 9 females, from rural and urban areas, who have learned professional photographic techniques. "I have learned to take quality pictures, good focus and many other techniques, such as getting good light in the photos, calculate the I.S.O, depth and create good compositions," explains Johan Bismarck, a 12-year-old boy from Somoto.
Furthermore, teens photographed several projects of education, child participation, health and food safety implemented by Save the Children in communities of Matagalpa and Jinotega.
“I am happy to participate in this workshop, because this is a unique experience for all children who are here and it can help us a lot in the future. We had the opportunity to learn photography, which is something new for all of us", says Xochil Balladares, a 16-year-girl from Siuna.
This time, Fred Roberts and his team joined Save the Children to carry out this workshop in Nicaragua as well as they did it last year in Bhutan, Asia.
According to renowned photographer, "I do these workshops for children throughout the world, in countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. My goal is to empower them. I teach photography, so they can use it as a language and they can tell their own stories, their lives, other children’s lives and the history of their countries”.
