To commemorate International Day of the Girl, Save the Children Nicaragua organized a conference with journalists, civil society organizations, and girls from rural areas of Nicaragua. Ninoska, Maridelia, Yeskania and Anielka shared their stories and invited attendees to make a commitment with gender equality, accountability, child participation and child investment in order to reach Every Last Child.
“A number of times, our rights are violated, that is our first challenge,” said Ninoska. “Media have to share our stories, our goals and our hope instead of just showing girls been victims of violence”, said Maridelia. “Girls in rural areas almost do not have access to education and they are excluded from development” explained Anielka, then she said that girls could do wonderful things and media had to share them widely.
“Defending Every Last Child is the main reason of our work as an organization. Every person in the world has to recognize that girls are not the property of someone else neither victims. Everyone has to see their potential to create a better world,” claimed Victoria Ward, Director of Save the Children for Latin America and the Caribbean.
“Every Last Child is a way to change exclusion conditions of millions of children and adolescents. It is a way to fight against the conditions which don`t allow girls take action and have resources to improve their lives”.
In addition, Save the Children presented a report of media monitoring at the conference. During 10 days, only 2.86% of news was related to girls, more than a half were related to violence and none of them included a declaration from the girl. See the complete report here.
