Wednesday 24 July 2013

The children of the municipality of Prinzapolka, North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN), now have better school buildings thanks to the rehabilitation of six schools as part of the implementation of the project: “Education in Areas of Conflict and Natural Disasters” executed by Save the Children in Miskito communities of the RAAN.

The aim of this project is to improve the quality of education through promoting multilingual and multicultural education; children´s psychosocial wellbeing, active learning and the development of quality school environments to facilitate learning; as well as child protection and children’s participation.

Schools in the communities of Buena Vista, Dos Amigos, Galilea, Limbaika, Ladrícola and Klarindan, were totally rehabilitated and refurbished in this first stage of the project with an investment of 120 thousand dollars, as well as equipping them with desk chairs, sinks, latrines and play areas.

The “Education in Areas of Conflict and Natural Disasters” project will build three new schools in the communities of Apavonta, Bluno II and Auhya Pura, since at present the children in these communities receive their lesson outdoors. The cost of this investment will be 219 thousand dollars.

The municipality of Prinzapolka is highly vulnerable to natural disasters (floods, storms and hurricanes) due to its characteristics and geographical location near the Caribbean Coast. An estimated 77.7% of its population is living in extreme poverty and more than 15 communities (of 32) have no school infrastructure.
